TV Promo: Sherlock

by Jim on December 23, 2011 · 0 comments

I honestly can’t remember if I’ve posted this before. It’s only 30 seconds and I’m irrationally excited about the return of the BBC’s Sherlock. Mostly it’s because the three episode first series was so great, but also in part because there hasn’t been a single new episode of television on in over a month. It’s the doldrums out there.

Trailer: Prometheus

Ridley Scott returning to the franchise that made him famous? Yes, please. I’ll be curious to see how this movie plays into the larger Alien mythology.

Jedi Ninjas

by Jim on December 22, 2011 · 0 comments

This video had me as soon as I realized this was better than anything George Lucas made in the last three Star Wars movies. Seriously, this fight scene was more dramatic, better paced action, and just better than the prequels. Sigh. It just goes to show that Star Wars could be vibrant if Lucas took his hands off the reigns.

Says Team 2X Productions: “Jedi Ninjas was developed as a passion project to recreate the current style of Star Wars action seen in video games into live action. This style often combines elements of Force powers with the use lightsaber combat. As there are no upcoming live action Star Wars movies to this date, this was a project to make many of the fans’ dreams into a reality.”

Anyway, the ending, however, is what really elevated this video into something special.

Splashing

by Jim on December 21, 2011 · 0 comments

Shikhei Goh’s “Splashing” won the grand-prize in  National Geographic’s 2011 Photo Contest:

Arrows of rain seem to pelt a dragonfly in Indonesia’s Riau Islands in Shikhei Goh’s winning image, “Splashing.”

A sudden rainstorm left Goh with a tough decision: Get his camera wet, or take advantage of the “superb lighting,” he wrote with his submission to the 2011 National Geographic Photography Contest.

He took the picture, resulting in a “very striking macrophotography image that rose to the top of the nature category for me because of its originality, beautiful light, rare action in a close-up image, as well as its technical perfection,” said Tim Laman, one of three National Geographic magazine photographers who judged the contest.

“You can almost feel the dragonfly’s experience of bracing itself against the weather,” said judge Amy Toensing. “When I look at it, I want to say, Hold on tight little buddy!”

“Splashing” is just a stupendous looking photo. It’s almost inconceivable.

It’s like checking back in with an old friend after many years and realizing everything you loved about them was still there in new and interesting ways. Hot damn, I was a little scared Peter Jackson would let me down with the Hobbit twofer, but that doesn’t seem to be the case. Not that I didn’t trust him, but Jackson pitched three perfect games with LOTR, and that’s a difficult feat to measure up to.

The dwarves look excellent and Martin Freeman is perfect for young Bilbo. Also a nice touch is maintaining the same aesthetic from LOTR. Often times when prequels are done many years after the first set of movie, the filmmakers don’t take into account any sort of continuity that the prequels took place before and therefore the technology, etc. wasn’t as advanced.

Again, not a problem. Giggity. [via collider]

Here is a video of golfer John Daly wearing white pants and an American flag sports coat and performing Bob Dylan’s “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door” in Thailand for guests of the Thailand Golf Championship. He was clean, sober, and yes, your guess is as good as mine.

There’s really not much else to say about the spiffy new trailer for The Dark Knight Rises.

The picNYC Table

The picNYC Table by Haiko Cornelissen Architecten is a grass-covered dining table that looks at once completely whimsical and impractical. The table aspires to transplant the rural into the urban environment.

“Suddenly, spilling water becomes a necessity instead of a problem and wine glasses need coasters not to prevent ring stains but to avoid tumbling,” the designer explains. The grass and soil are very much real and need the attention of your green thumb.  [via Doobybrain]

Here’s an excellent hour-long BBC documentary about Steve Jobs, featuring interviews with Woz, Stephen Fry, Tim Berners-Lee, John Sculley and many more. [via kottke]
